Head Teacher/Staff Governor
I have been deputy head teacher at Woodthorpe JI School since 2007, and now have the privilege and honour of serving the school and its community as Head Teacher. We are a happy, inclusive school and I look forward to continuing to build a future of opportunity for our children. This is made possible by our dedicated team of staff and governors and from the support of our parents, carers and wider community.
I have been teaching at Woodthorpe J&I since 2008 and have been a Staff Governor for the large majority of that time. I have spent 5 years teaching in Year 6, and been more recently based in Years 3 and 4. My school responsibilities involve leading both Physical Education and Computing within the school, as well as forming part of the e-Safety and Buildings and Finance committees. My appointment as Deputy Head Teacher of the school mean that I have an important role to play on both a strategic and operational level at the school.
I am passionate and enthusiastic towards the need for transparent and efficient methods of communication between all stakeholders at the school and have been proud of what the Governing Body has achieved over recent years.
Ms Rebecca Carrington
I have been teaching Year 6 at Woodthorpe since 2013 and since September 2017 I have been the Assistant Head and SENDCo. This has meant that I now have a strategic role, particularly in the leadership of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities across the school. A role which focuses on the inclusion of all children, something I am passionate and enthusiastic about.
I am committed to the school and have gained a great insight into the wider aspects of running a school since joining the governing body. I am enjoying the opportunity to also share my perspective and knowledge of the children and school with the governors.
Parent Governor (Safeguarding / Attendance)
I am fortunate to have two children who attend Woodthorpe – Ellie and Henry. We have had such positive experiences at the school, that I decided to put myself forward as a Parent Governor. Fortunately, I was elected in September 2019. I am a primary school teacher myself and have worked in schools in central and south Birmingham for 15 years. I bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the role and feel honoured to support our community. It is imperative that we all work together to make sure our future generations are nurtured, inspired and develop a rich love of learning; I want to help to make sure that continues to happen at our fantastic school.
Parent Governor (Health & Safety)
I became a parent governor in 2018 after my children joined the school. I have been really impressed by the school and share its pursuit of helping children reach their full potential. I hope we keep what makes it special and always look out for ways to make it even better.
I have a degree in International Development and a Masters in Development Economics and I have worked in the charity sector for nearly 20 years, in the UK and around the world. I now work in human rights, and have the flexibility to volunteer my time as a governor and I am really enjoying contributing to the work of the board.
Both of my children attended Woodthorpe School between 2001 and 2010 and in 2006 I was elected to the Governing Body as a Parent Governor. My children both enjoyed their time at Woodthorpe School and received an excellent education whilst there. When my children moved on to Secondary school I was very happy to be asked to be a Co-opted Governor.?
I have held a number of posts within the Governing body over the years and I am now the Chair. I feel very proud of the school and will continue to work to ensure that all the children receive the education they deserve. My profession is a Chief Audiologist and I work at the QE Hospital.?
Co-opted Governor (SEND / CLA)
I became a Co-Opted Governor in 2019 after moving from London to Birmingham. In London, I was a school governor for a single form entry school between 2017 and 2019. I have always been interested in supporting young people, having done a number of volunteer roles before becoming a school governor. I have a particular interest in SEND support and I am the SEND Link Governor at Woodthorpe. I hope my background in the corporate world will bring lots of benefit to the board and I am looking forward to working closely with Woodthorpe staff and children!
Co-opted Governor (Training and Development / GDPR / Health & Safety)
I have been a Governor at this school for over 12 years - starting as a Parent Governor when my children were at this school. I have held various positions from Vice Chair to Chair of the Curriculum Committee. As a Learning & Development and Health & Safety Manager I believe I can provide additional skills that support the school and pupils. I am very proud of the teachers and pupils at Woodthorpe with not only the results they achieve but also the ethos and environment they create to give pupils a great experience.
Mr Steven Jackson
Co-opted Governor (Pupil Premium / Sports Premium)
I have been a co-opted governor since December 2017 and I am a member of the Curriculum and Policy Committee. I am also a member of Woodthorpe Friends. I have two young children, the eldest being a pupil at Woodthorpe. For the last six years I have been employed in university admissions. Prior to this I practised law for more than a decade and prior to that I worked in the Civil Service. Woodthorpe provides such a happy, stimulating and caring environment for its pupils and I believe passionately that every child deserves a fulfilling and enjoyable education. I wanted to give up some of my time to contribute to our school’s continuing success, including ensuring consistently high standards of achievement for all children
at Woodthorpe, and I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to do so.
Parent Governor (Curriculum)
I became a parent governor in 2010 as I have always been enthusiastic about education, having worked and volunteered in the primary sector of education for over 16 years. I am a committed member of the governing body as I have seen first-hand how the school has maintained its very high standard of education and well-being for all children.
I have a child who is in Year 5 at Woodthorpe and my other child who attended Woodthorpe is now in Year 10 at secondary school. I am a member of the Curriculum and Standards Committee. I aim to continue to support Woodthorpe J&I School so they can continue to deliver high standards of teaching and learning in all aspects of the curriculum to prepare our children for their future.
